Hangout One Happy Place

During the pandemic, a family friend started a local nonprofit organization in my hometown that provides a safe space for teens and young adults with disabilities to hang out and socialize. At first, meetups were held at our town`s park every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for two hours. Everyone would play board games, hang out on the playground, play different sports, and participate in arts and crafts projects. As the group grew larger and began to need chaperones, I knew I wanted to get involved and support them in any way I could.

I began volunteering four days a week with The Hangout One Happy Place and fell in love. I met all different types of people and learned about their disabilities and found myself instantly connecting with them. I began helping with running different sporting activities such as kickball, baseball, and even basketball, and I would help out with different arts and craft projects. When the summer ended, we continued the Hangout by renting out a local community center that provides us with many different opportunities to hang out and have a good time.

We created a gaming room where we have a Wii and a GameCube set up for members who want to play and work together to beat all of the different games. I manage this area; I help with the process of fixing any damages and even offer suggestions to help improve the room and our overall space. Since securing the community center, we`ve been able to host parties for Halloween, the winter holidays, New Year's Eve, and even a Valentine's Day party for which everyone got dressed up. I love volunteering with this organization, and I plan on continuing my involvement in any way I can.
